Artist Statement
“The Heart’s Terrain: A Discipline of Worship” emerges from my longing for inner transformation through an ever-deepening intimacy with God. This body of work reflects a journey shaped by trial—seasons of uncertainty, loss, and surrender—where worship is not performance, but a daily discipline of trust. Through these seasons of life, I have learned to release control and to recognize God’s presence not only in resolution, but in the waiting itself.
As a Korean-American, semi-abstract visual artist, I turn to landscapes and nature as both mirror and sanctuary. Painting is about charting a passage through struggle, transformation, and return. Hills, rivers, and trees become metaphors for the inner life—terrain marked by turbulence and stillness, despair and renewal, all held within the faithful movement of grace.
Each work unfolds through layered processes: gestural brushstrokes that suggest motion, textured surfaces built from paper and pigment, and colors that oscillate between shadow and radiance. These layers carry the memory of hardship while remaining rooted in the possibility of growth. Texture plays a central role in my practice. I tear, strip, and embed papers, fabric, and found materials into the surface, extending the painting into dimensional space. The inclusion of Hanji (traditional Korean paper) is both physical and symbolic—anchoring my heritage while transforming fragility into strength.
Through ink, acrylic, oil sticks, and layered matter, the paintings become acts of devotion—sites where chaos and calm coexist. This exhibition invites viewers to encounter nature as witness and companion, and to reflect on their own journeys of wandering, trust, and the profound return home.
Artist Bio
Korean-born, self-taught artist Jennifer Ahn creates semi-abstract landscapes that weave memory, travel, and the redemptive power of nature into a layered visual language. Her journey as a full-time artist began from witnessing the mortality of loved ones, an experience that deepened her exploration of impermanence, longing, and resilience. Themes of humanity as sojourners—seeking belonging amid struggle and desolation—permeate her work.
